FAISALABAD:

Family of a missing man, feared to have been killed by the police, protested against the police on Tuesday. The man has been missing since January. Police say he fled from the lock up.

Kanjwani Road remained blocked for more than four hours due to the protest.

Muhammad Ajmal, a relative of the deceased, said that Asad Ali, 25, was arrested on January 12 in an abduction case.

He said the police obtained his physical remand twice without producing him in the court.

He said on May 18 they filed a petition in the court of Riaz Ahmad Cheena seeking orders for the police to produce Ali in the court.

He said the judge summoned the police and ordered them to produce Ali, but they did not.

At the previous hearing last week, he said, the SHO told the court that Ali had fled the lock up.

Ajmal said Ali’s family suspected that the police had killed him and hidden his body.

Demanding immediate recovery of Ali, the protesters asked the district police officer to take action against those responsible.

Station House Officer Inspector Muhammad Akbar denied killing the man. He said he had been able to flee due to the negligence of some police officials.

He said police were looking for him.

Deputy Superintendent Police Khalid Mehmood visited the scene and assured the protestors that Ali would soon be rearrested and presented before the court.

He said the investigation officer and the constable on duty the night Ali fled had been arrested for negligence.
