LAHORE:

The city traffic police launched a weeklong awareness drive, dubbed the ‘Stop at Red Light’ campaign, here on Saturday.

The campaign aims to teach motorists about basic traffic rules, like stopping at red lights and staying in one road lane, according to traffic police officials. An awareness camp has been set up near the Assembly Chambers on The Mall, where Chief Traffic Officer Sohail Chaudhry distributed pamphlets on traffic rules on Saturday.

For one week, traffic wardens will give warnings to motorists who violate traffic signals, stop lines and lane lines. From September 16, wardens will start issuing tickets for such violations.

The chief traffic officer said that the breaking of traffic rules was one of the major causes of road accidents. Cars and motorcycles often sped up as they approached traffic lights, he said, sometimes resulting in accidents. Motorists should look out for other vehicles when approaching traffic lights, and should only cross when they are green, he said. Two other awareness camps had been set up elsewhere in the city, he added.
