The Lahore High Court on Friday called for a judicial report regarding a 24-year-old man allegedly attacked with acid by his in-laws in Muzaffargarh.
The LHC directed the district and sessions judge to investigate the matter and submit a report on the steps taken by the police in this regard.
A media report had said Liaqat, a resident of Baitmeera Hazaar Jatoi, had married Sumaira Bibi a year ago. A few weeks ago, the couple had quarrelled and Sumaira had returned to her parents’ house.
Neighbours said Sumaria’s parents had demanded that Liaqat and his parents apologise for insulting their daughter.
Liaqat’s brother, Muhammad Jafar, told police that Sumaira’s mother Fatima Bibi and three men had entered their house and beat Liaqat up before throwing a jug full of acid at him.
Jafar said he heard his brother scream and rushed to his rescue. He said he saw the assailants flee. Liaqat was taken to a hospital where doctors treating him said that he had 60 per cent burns.
Jafar claimed that some of Sumaira Bibi’s relatives had earlier threatened his brother.
He said Liaqat had visited her several times but they her parents told him to leave and return with his parents.
Baitmeera Hazaar police have registered a case against the Sumaira Bibi, Fatima Bibi and three relatives nominated by the victim’s father, Hazoor Baksh.
Police said they were investigating the complaint but has not arrested anybody.
