LAHORE:

Justice Ijazul Ahsan of the Lahore High Court on Thursday sought a detailed response from the government regarding a petition filed by the Young Doctors’ Association (YDA) seeking action against the police for beating protesting doctors and detaining them for eight hours without an FIR.

The petitioners’ counsel Noshab Khan asked for a judicial commission to probe the matter.

He said the police had uprooted the doctors’ hunger strike camp outside Services Hospital on Jail Road, on February 10.

They had also baton charged protestors resulting in injuries to several doctors. The police had also arrested several doctors and detained them at the North Cantonment police station for eight hours without an FIR.

Khan requested the court to investigate the matter and bring those at fault to book. Faisal Zaman, appearing on behalf of the government, said the doctors had left patients unattended in hospitals and tried to block the way of diplomats who came to attend the Metro Bus inauguration. He said the police were forced to take action. Justice Ahsan adjourned the hearing till February 22.
