LAHORE:

Chief Secretary Naveed Akram Cheema has directed education authorities to ensure that enrolment targets are achieved in accordance with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The chief secretary, at a meeting on Thursday, also directed officials to provide missing facilities at various schools at the earliest, and use up all the funds allocated for the purpose during the current financial year.

The School Education Department secretary briefed the meeting about the progress made in enrolling out-of-school children and providing missing facilities.

The chief secretary said that the provision of quality education was the government’s top priority.

He said that the Punjab government was following a roadmap for school education reforms focusing on 100 per cent enrolment as well as retention of students to meet the constitutional requirement that every child in the Punjab be provided free, compulsory and quality education.

Cheema said that quality of education and socio-economic development targets were closely linked. He also directed the education authorities to chalk out a comprehensive strategy to teach public school students to be creative, confident and innovative.
