RAWALPINDI:

Relatives of the persons arrested for their alleged involvement in the Ashura violence along with Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen activists staged a protest demonstration on Benazir Bhutto Road against the Rawalpindi police on Tuesday, accusing them of taking innocent citizens into custody.

Their sit-in at Liaqat Chowk kept Benazir Bhutto Road blocked for more than an hour, causing problem for motorists and pedestrians alike.

The protesters chanted slogans against the Rawalpindi police, alleging they had violated the sanctity of their households during their raids. They added that instead of arresting the real culprits, the police, in order to satisfy the government, are arresting innocent youth.

Officials of the district administration assured the protesters that proper investigations would be carried out and innocent people would be released.
