LAHORE:

The inspector general of Punjab prisons told a three-member bench of the Supreme Court on Monday that two deputy superintendents and a jail warden had been suspended when a lizard was found in the food served to a number of female prisoners at Kot Lakhpat Jail.

The IG said an inquiry into the matter was underway and would be completed soon.

The bench, headed by Chief Justice Tasadduq Hussain Jilani, was holding a hearing on suo motu notice.

Prisons IG Farooq Nazeer and DIG Malik Mubashir both appeared before the court.

The DIG said the inquiry report would be completed in 24 hours and its findings submitted to the court.

He said a lizard had been found in one of the three degs of chicken being served to women prisoners.

He said prison officials had immediately arranged for fresh food when it was found.
