Public health: 389 safe water taps proposed

LAHORE: 

A proposal for the installation of taps at sources in the water distribution network of Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan and Gujranwala to lower contamination risk has been submitted to the chief minister.

The proposed project is estimated to cost around Rs500 million, a senior official of the Housing and Urban Development said.

He said the department had studied samples of water collected from five major cities in December and found that bacterial contamination occurred in the distribution network which was old, rusty and ruptured.

He said the department had decided to install taps at points where groundwater was being pumped.

He said the housing secretary had submitted a proposal to the chief minister in the first week of January. He said department had proposed installing 389 taps in all five cities; 107 in Lahore, 22 in Faisalabad, 170 in Rawalpindi, 70 in Multan and 20 in Gujranwala.
