Police on Saturday arrested a robber who confessed that he had sexually assaulted a minor girl.
News reports claimed that the man had confessed to the Lahore rape case in which a 5-year-old girl was sexually assaulted and left outside Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on September 13 last year.
However, Lahore’s Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) police could not confirm whether he was involved in the case or not.
They will send the suspect’s DNA samples for testing to confirm the link.
The CIA police stopped a car on suspicion and the driver, Ejaz alias Jajji, was detained after they found an illegal weapon on him. But during the interrogation, he admitted that he was a robber and also confessed to raping a minor girl.
He, along with his accomplice, Welayat, was parking his car in a garage in Sharifpura area when they saw the child there and kidnapped her. They raped the girl and when her condition deteriorated, they dropped her near the hospital and fled.
An FIR for conducting robbery was registered against Ejaz and his accomplice. The charges for rape will be levelled, if proven, after the DNA test results.
The police had earlier arrested several suspects in the rape case but were later released them after questioning.
Rights campaigners had staged protest rallies across Pakistan against the rape of the five-year-old girl.
