An Indian leopard was shot dead on Monday after it crossed the border into Punjab and injured two villagers, the Press Trust of India reported.

According to reports, the leopard crossed the border at Taran on Sunday and attacked a group of people, creating panic in a village close to the border at Ferozewala, located 60 kilometres from Lahore.

Residents of the village shot the leopard dead after it mauled two people. The injured men were admitted to a hospital in Sheikhupura district, where officials describe their condition as critical.

This is the second instance of an Indian leopard straying across the border in the past few weeks. Last month, wildlife authorities captured an Indian leopard from near the international border after it strayed into Narowal sector.

The leopard has been kept at Lahore Zoo and the authorities are now trying to find a mate for it.
