Medical education: 20 workshops held on first day of AEME conference

LAHORE: 

Hundreds of healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, hospital administrators and researchers participated in the 20 workshops held on the opening day of the Association for Excellence in Medical Education (AEME) Conference on Friday.

College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan (CPSP) held workshops on competency-based curriculum and professionalism. University of Illinois Dean Ara Tekian and the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER) President John Norcini spoke on the occasion.

King Edward Medical University (KEMU) hosted workshops on performance-based assessments and research in health education, facilitated by Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) Assistant Vice Presiden Dr John R Boulet.

At Allama Iqbal Medical College Lahore, Stefan Lindgren, president of the World Federation for Medical Education, conducted workshops on the role of universities in educating health professionals and undergraduate medical curriculum.

At University of Health Sciences, workshops on critical writing in medical education and collaboration in small groups were facilitates by Dr Ian Willis and Dr Janet Strivens of Liverpool University.

Workshops were also held at Fatima Jinnah Medical College, Services Institutes of Medical Sciences, CMH Medical College and Lahore Medical and Dental College.

Addressing a press conference at UHS on Thursday, UHS Vice Chancellor Major General (r) Muhammad Aslam said the conference was being held to highlight various aspects of medical education, its importance and the ways to promote it in Pakistan.

He said the conference was organised in public-private partnership and major teaching and medical institutions were collaborating for the event.

He said the conference would be attended by over 600 health professionals.

“The conference is a credit to Lahore as it represents a collaboration between medical education and health sectors,” he said.

Pro-Vice Chancellor of Isra University Umar Ali Khan said there would be 20 pre-conference workshops, oral and poster presentations, keynote speeches, mini-symposia, short courses and plenary discussions during the conference.
