ISLAMABAD: Punjab recorded the highest number of kidnapping for ransom cases registered over the past one year among all provinces and territories, according to information shared by the Minister for Interior Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan to the National Assembly on Wednesday.

Punjab was followed by Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh, while Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir ranked at the bottom.

Except for Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, all provinces and territories had a higher number of persons recovered than the number of cases registered, reflecting the resolution of cases from previous years.

The chart below represents the number of kidnapping for ransom cases registered and the number of persons recovered, in total and broken down according to provinces and territories.

Death sentences for drug offences

To questions by Dr Shireen Mazari, the Interior Minister provided the National Assembly with figures on persons facing the death penalty for drug offences including foreigners.

The National Assembly was informed that there are at present a total of 444 individuals facing drug offence related cases that are punishable by the death penalty.

However there are only 100 individuals who have actually been awarded the death sentence since 1997. Of these 70 sentences were either set aside by High Courts or the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Leaving 30 actually on death row.

The Assembly was also given details about foreigners who were facing the death sentence for drug offences in Pakistan.
