LAHORE:

A drug-testing laboratory will be established at King Edward Medical University (KEMU), the university’s Syndicate decided here on Wednesday, said a press release.

Conducting its 19th meeting, the Syndicate also approved Prof Asad Aslam Khan, the university’s acting vice chancellor, as the KEMU representative on the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council.

The participants in the meeting decided that two seats in every postgraduate programme at the university would be reserved for students from Balochistan. The seats will be advertised separately in newspapers.

The Syndicate also decide to recruit teachers at the following vacant positions: professor of histology, associate professor of child psychiatry, professor of biomedical sciences and assistant professor of biomedical sciences.

Finally, the Syndicate members condemned protests by some doctors against the shifting of female students to a former hostel for boys. Some members suggested that those who triggered the protests against the university’s administration should be transferred.

The university decided last year to demolish the girls hostel because of its dilapidated condition and is building a new one.

Meanwhile, it decided to shift the female students to the Brooms Hostel, which is located in a compound among other hostels for boys, and move the male students out. Various protests against the move have been held, most recently by female students on Tuesday.

The Syndicate meeting was chaired by the vice chancellor and attended by Health Department and Finance Department officials, Mayo Hospital and KEMU faculty members, and the medical superintendents of Lady Willingdon Hospital and Lady Atchison Hospital.
