BAHAWALPUR: A man suspected of being part of an abduction gang was killed during a failed kidnapping attempt on Sunday night in Bahawalpur.

Abdul Majeed and his friend Muhammad Hakeem, residents of Kotla Dolat, were travelling to Bangla Qasim when they were stopped by unidentified gunmen riding on two bikes near village 216/R-5. The gunmen snatched Rs48,000 and mobile phones from them. They also took away Majeed and asked his friend to arrange a five million rupee ransom.

The abductors then fled from the area on motorbikes. In the meantime, Din Muhammad, a resident of the area, arrived there on his car. Hakeem told him about the abduction and the two started chasing the abductors.

They soon spotted the abductors, who started firing shots at them. During the firing, a bullet accidently hit one of the abductors, who fell from his bike.

The abductors released Majeed and fled from the area.

The suspect died on the spot. Police reached the area after the incident.

The body of the suspected kidnapper was sent to the hospital for autopsy.

Police said the deceased had not been identified.

A case has been registered against the unidentified criminals.
