LAHORE:

Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Amin Wains said on Tuesday more than 250 motorcycles retrieved from the offices and residences of police officers would be used for patrolling of the city.

He was speaking to reporters at a ceremony in Qila Gujjar Singh to hand over the motorcycles to the heads of several police stations.

The CCPO said the motorcycles had been used for non-operational activities. He said the step would help curb street crime. He said police were working on a plan to divide the city into 400 beats.

“Under the new strategy, each patrolling beat will be supervised by an official from the Police Department. The official will work in liaison with beat safety committees consisting of people from the respective neighbourhood,” Wains said.

The CCPO said the plan would be operational in a few days. He said that police officials in every beat had been directed to attend funerals and weddings to check untoward activities.

“The practice will help provide a better security cover to citizens. Police official will particularly check the incidents of celebratory fire at wedding functions,” Wains said.

The CCPO said that police would computerise the record of citizens visiting police stations across the city.
