“Smoke emission from factories and industrial wastewater discharges pose major threats to human lives and need to be dealt with strictly,” Government College University Faisalabad Vice Chancellor Zakir Hussain told a seminar on Collaborative Endeavours of Chemistry in Industry arranged by the GCUF chemistry department here on Thursday.
He said 37 per cent of the country’s population lived in the cities and environmental problems such as air and water pollution, waste management, congestion and the destruction of fragile ecosystems were issues of major concern.
Hussain said strong ties between the industry and chemistry experts would help address the issues. He said a comprehensive strategy in this regard needed to be adopted.
Dr Din Muhammad, the Chemical Society of Pakistan president, said the non-governmental organisation had been imparting theoretical and practical knowledge of chemical sciences since 1968.
He said academics and scientists working in government institutions and industrial set ups were all part of the chemical society.
Science and Technology Dean Naureen Aziz Qureshi urged the scientists to produce relevant to the needs of the local industry.
