BAHAWALPUR:

A man and his brother were arrested on Thursday for allegedly killing the former’s wife over alleged elopement.

Police said Muhammad Akram Gopang, a resident of Nabipur near Abadpur, took his wife Rukayya Bibi out of their home around 10am on a motorcycle and killed her with help from his brother Ejaz Ahmad Gopang.

They said she was butchered as well as shot her in the head. The men were arrested while trying to dump the body in a field. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination.

Police said Rukayya Bibi had eloped on March 8.

She was brought back four days ago after a panchayat decision. On Thursday, they said, Akram was ostensibly on his way to drop her at her parents’ home for a visit, when he killed her on the way.

Muhammad Yousaf and Manan Mai, parents of the deceased, told police that the panchayat leaders— Malik Zabiullah Khan and Sardar Mashooq Khan Korai— had assured them that no one would harm their daughter on her return.
