The Punjab government has appointed Dr Umer Saif as the first vice chancellor of the IT University Punjab, said a press release.
Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif praised Dr Saif as an IT expert of international repute.
The vice chancellor said that his main objective was to equip young people with expertise that would help them develop the local IT industry. He was hopeful that he could turn the new university into one of the best institutions in the country.
Dr Saif had been working as associate professor of computer science at LUMS, where he did a BSc (Hons) in 1998. He has a PhD from the University of Cambridge and a post-doctorate from MIT.
He has also served as a research scientist at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.
