LAHORE:

Returning Officer Rai Ayub Marth, who is also an additional district and sessions judge, on Saturday dismissed for non-prosecution an application seeking action against former Punjab Assembly deputy speaker Rana Mashhood for alleged deception in renaming a hospital after his father.

Petitioner Muhammad Farhan, a voter in Mashhood’s PP-149 constituency, had alleged that the hospital was officially named Sodiwal Hospital, but the former deputy speaker had put up signboards declaring it to be Government Rana Abdul Rahim Memorial Hospital. It was the first application filed to a returning officer.

He had also inaugurated the hospital before it had become operational, in an attempt to win votes, Farhan alleged. The hospital had been plastered with PML-N signs and banners, he said.

At the previous hearing, Mashhood denied committing any violation of the Election Commission’s code of conduct. He said that the hospital had been renamed by Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, in honour of his father’s services to society.

Mashhood said that the hospital had formerly been a dispensary which had been illegally occupied by a former councillor. He had had the premises vacated and added further land so that it could be converted into a hospital, for which the chief minister had sanctioned Rs55 million.

The police also submitted a report at the hearing confirming that the Punjab government had sanctioned the renaming of the hospital.
