GUJRANWALA: A massive clash broke out between the Christian and the Muslim community of Francis Colony in Gujranwala on Wednesday, reportedly over a minor scuffle.

According to initial details, two boys on a motorcycle-rickshaw were beaten and threatened by some men on Tuesday night, which led to the clashes. However, other media reports suggest the boys were beaten up for listening to loud music. It could not be ascertained as to which community carried out the initial act of violence.

A large crowd, armed with sticks and weapons, attacked cars and shops in the colony on Wednesday. Some Muslims reportedly tried to attack a church in the locality, after which a large crowd of Christians came out on the roads and started protesting.

They also resorted to attacking cars and other property.

According to Express News, the police was present at the spot but refrained from stopping the mob, as many in the crowd were armed.

When the police fired shells at the mob, a number of individuals in the mob fired back, resulting in at least three people being injured.

The Christians claimed that the police officials were involved in the incident.

CCPO Gujranwala visited the area after reports of the clash emerged. He went to the church where he addressed the Christian community and appealed to them to stop the protest. He also suspended three police officials allegedly involved in the incident.

The clash continues despite heavy police presence.
