FAISALABAD:

A woman was set on fire allegedly by her husband on Wednesday. Police have arrested the husband on the complaint of her parents.

Sargodha Road police said Mazharul Hasan, a resident of Hajveri Town, had married Misbah Bibi, 25, six years ago.

They said she had developed differences with her in-laws and left home in February 2013. They said she had started living at her parents’ house in Multan.

A few days ago, Misbah Bibi’s parents told police, Hasan persuaded her to return.

On Wednesday, they said, they were informed that he had set her on fire after throwing petrol on her.

They said some neighbours had taken her to Allied Hospital, where doctors treating her said that her condition was critical. They also informed the police.

Dr Muhammad Ameen at the Allied Hospital said Misbah Bibi had 60 per cent burns. He said she was kept in intensive care.

Station House Officer Inspector Abid Husain Zafar said Mazhar had denied the allegation. He said they had quarrelled on Wednesday morning and that she had locked herself in a room and set herself on fire. He said he and his family had broken the door and called some neighbours for help.

Taking notice of the incident, City Police Officer Riffat Mukhtar Raja directed the Madina Town SP and the Sargodha Road SHO to investigate the matter.

Muhammad Naseer, a neighbour, said that Hasan and Misbah Bibi often quarrelled. He said she had earlier left home twice, but came back.
