Discovering Cholistan: Camel fighting and Derawar Fort photos draw crowds

BAHAWALPUR: 

A two-day art exhibition highlighting life in Cholistan ended at the Baghdadul Jadid Campus of the Islamia University Bahawalpur on Tuesday.

It was inaugurated by Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Mukhtar, who also presided over the concluding ceremony. Dr Parveen Shah, vice chancellor of the Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur Meeras, was also present.

Addressing the students Dr Mukhtar said that the IUB had been trying to preserve and promote Cholistani culture. He said the University College of Art and Design too was set up for the purpose.

The exhibits included paintings, installations and photographs of Cholistani communities, buildings, animals, plants, and socio-cultural events.

Photographs showing camel fighting and dancing and shots of the Derawar Fort at various times of the day were attracted most appreciation.

The exhibition had work of two University College of Art and Design teachers – Farhana Altaf Qureshi and Hassan Ali Qureshi. Farhana, one of the senior lecturers at the University College of Art and Design, had a master’s in arts from the Lahore College for Women University in Lahore.

She said she had participated in many group exhibitions. Farhana’s research paper was taken by an international journal in March 2013.

Hassan, a graduated from the Bahauddin Zakariya University’s College of of Arts in Multan, has been working as a graphic design lecturer at the IUB College of Art and Design since 2009.

Hassan won the first prize at a photography exhibition organised at the King Edward Medical University in Lahore in 2008. His work has also been published in the Bahawalpur Travel Guide.

Chief guests in the two days included University of Gujrat VC Dr Nizamuddin, University of Haripur VC Dr Nasir Ali Khan, University of Balochistan, Quetta, VC Dr Rasool Bakhash Raisani and director of COMSATS Vehari Campus Dr Khairuzzaman.
