FAISALABAD: More than 40 houses in Tandlianwala Saddar were inundated after a breach in the canal here on Monday. A 15-foot breach occurred in the Gogera Branch near Khai Bungalow.
Residents of the village have accused the Irrigation Department officials of negligence. They demanded that water be immediately removed from the village.
Muhammad Rafiq, one of the villagers, said that the canal banks had become weak due to frequent cattle traffic. He said several complaints had been submitted with the officials concerned asking them to fix the banks, but to no avail. “We had suggested that they should take action against those who bathed their cattle here on the canal and that a notice prohibiting it be put up. But no one took action.”
Muhammad Nadeem, another villager, said that assistant commissioner, the tehsildar and the Punjab Irrigation and Drainage Authority were also informed, but no one visited the village. He said the residents tried to plug the breach themselves.
