LAHORE:

In its attempt to educate people not to litter the streets, last week, the Lahore Waste Management Company put together a team of ‘litter wardens’ comprising students of the Punjab University, University of Engineering and Technology, University of Central Punjab, Superior College, Divisional Public School and Cathedral School, to create awareness among at least 5,000 citizens, LWMC spokesperson Maimoona Arsalan Bhatti told The Express Tribune.

On Saturday and Sunday, about 500 volunteers (wardens) were deputed at markets and traffic junctions to create awareness. The students were told to tell people not to litter the roads while travelling.

The wardens handed out ‘challans’ to citizens caught littering the roads and other public places. The students were posted at the Mughalpura Bridge, Jail Road, The Mall, the Liberty round about, Lakshmi Chowk and Samanabad.

About 20,000 citizens signed the Litter Free Lahore Resolution in the two days.

Some citizens suggested that law enforcement agencies should be tasked with punishing people for littering. Faraz Ahmed, a banker, said, “the society needs to understand the effects of littering. Only active law enforcement can ensure that.”

The campaign will continue till May 3.
